Here are answers to frequently asked questions from DAN members regarding COVID-19 regarding DAN membership benefits.

The different DAN membership packages provided by DAN Southern Africa cover medical emergencies. They are designed to pay for medical treatments and additional travel expenses caused by unforeseen injury or illness.

Our membership packages don’t cover any cancellation, curtailment, trip interruption or additional accommodation costs caused by COVID-19, lockdown situations or any other governmental advisory.

The DAN membership plans provided by DAN Southern Africa cover medical emergencies. We do not cover the cost of any additional travel and accommodation expenses in the event of flight cancellation or airline closure. We recommend you contact your travel providers for guidance on alternative travel arrangements.

We will do whatever we can to help, and to meet our obligations under your membership benefits in respect of medical and hospital expenses, and all other membership benefits. However, we remind you that our membership packages have specific limitations and exclusions regarding travelling against the advice of your government.

If your journey started before your government issued restrictive measures, cover stays active, within the limits of your membership package. Please note that you are expected to accept any repatriation options provided by your country of residence.

It is important to note that the current pandemic has rendered moving individuals from one country to another, even for medical reasons, much more difficult because of the absence of flights other than those organised by governments to repatriate their still healthy citizens. It is very likely ill individuals will have to be treated in situ.

Our recommendation to all DAN Members is to not expose themselves to unnecessary risk in this particular time. This includes limiting or refraining from diving activities, because of the increasing unavailability of appropriate treatment facilities should DCI occur.

Members must take advantage of any opportunity to return home as soon as such an opportunity presents itself, rather than risking to remain trapped in a foreign country for possibly several weeks. Please remember that it’s of utmost importance to keep yourself informed of the current instructions issued by your country of residence, and those of the country where you currently are, and strictly follow them.

The Coronavirus outbreak has officially been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). Many countries are under lockdown and imposed travel restrictions.

DAN Southern Africa membership packages have specific limitations and exclusions regarding travelling against the advice of your government. 

If your journey started before your government issued restrictive measures, cover stays active and we will pay for medical expenses up to the amount shown in your schedule of benefits, and subject to the terms and conditions of your policy. We may also cover the cost of additional travel expenses incurred. It’s important for you to know that in case you are testing positive for COVID-19, you might be put in quarantine for a defined period in the country in which you find yourself, and you will not be allowed to be moved.

When more nationals of the same country contracted the virus in the same area, their government may decide to repatriate them all in a single movement in order that a mass containment and subsequent quarantine of all these people can be managed. This would be out of our control and thus subject to the individual government’s rules and practices.
