Equipment Used: Sony A7III, Sony 16–35mm f/4 lens, Seafrogs housing, dual SUPE D-Max strobes.
Location:
South Africa, False Bay, Whittle Rock Reef

This photo, titled Woven Baskets, was taken on a perfect day at Whittle Rock in False Bay, my favourite dive site in Cape Town. On this dive, we descended straight onto a forest of red sea fans covered in basket stars, gently swaying in the surge. It was one of the most spectacular sights I have experienced underwater. The biggest challenge in getting this shot was simply finding a clear angle, since every photographer on the boat was trying to capture the same scene.

I found two individuals who had settled on the same fan with their arms intertwined in a way I had never seen before. Basket stars are typically solitary, so I am still unsure whether these two were mating or competing for space. Either way, this shot ended up being my best attempt at capturing a scene that photos can never fully do justice to.
